When we saw Leoncavallo entered in the Goffs 2018 January sale, we we’re very keen to secure the horse. Pleasingly, the hammer dropped our way for a very fair £21,000.
Leoncavallo needs little introduction. This son of Cape Cross won his first 5 races over hurdles. One of those wins was the prestigious Wensleydale hurdle at Wetherby. Leoncavallo than ran in the 2015 Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival finishing an excellent 5th. Only the likes of Ivanovich Gorbatov, Apple’s Jade, Footpad & Let’s Dance finished in front of him.
Leoncavallo was transferred back to Godolphin after his Cheltenham efforts. He ran twice on the flat, winning first time out and beaten in a photo finish. This very talented horse then went full circle and made the move back to National Hunt racing with another different trainer.
Leoncavallo ran two big races on his first starts for new connections, peaking at a rating of 145. He was then stepped up in trip and lost his way a little.
Dr Richard Newland who will train Leoncavallo is very good at turning these horses around. We’ll drop him back in trip and start from scratch. We want to get Leoncavallo over a fence sooner rather than later. A horse that achieved a classy rating like him going chasing, could be very exciting.
Leoncavallo is a fantastic recruit, we can’t wait to get him going through the Spring & Summer months.
