Smad Place secured a fantastic victory in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury.
Trained by Alan King the 8yo grey jumped great from the outset and led from near start to finish, he jumped his rivals ragged. I believe the performance was right up there with the best we’ve seen this season, Smad Place was carrying plenty of weight on soft / heavy ground but still won easily.
He might just be a lively outsider for Cheltenham Gold Cup and you couldn’t blame connections for having a go based on this performance.
Good racing this week with the Tingle Creek on Saturday plus the Becher Chase over the Grand National fences at Aintree.
Before that, I’m heading to the Newmarket Mares’ sales tomorrow in a bid to pick up an 80 rated plus middle distance mare that will run on the flat next season. Any new purchase will be trained by the very shrewd Chris Wall and likely switch to hurdles at a later date.
