After a long week at the Newmarket sales, I’m pleased to inform we secured a very smart horse called Royal Reef.
Royal Reef is a 4yo gelding standing at a grand 16.3 hands, he holds a flat rating of 83 and is built like a tank. Royal Reef looks like a National Hunt horse rather than a flat runner. His sire is Duke Of Marmalade whilst Royal Reef is half-brothers to, FIRST CORNERSTONE a Group 2 winner and winner of £93,000 in prize money and BUXTED “won 50k” and two further winners.
He’s very much bred in the purple.
Royal Reef was still growing as a 2yo and didn’t start racing until he was 3, RR was on the weak side due to his size hence him given an easy time of things. As a 4yo and now starting to fill his frame, Royal Reef raced 8 times in 2016 winning 4 races including his last starts, he also placed twice. He’s hugely consistent and is developing into a very smart animal.
Race replays over his last two starts can be viewed below:

Royal Reef holds an official rating of 83, that’s well above average. The horse stays strongly and shows a good turn of foot.
Our new recruit is going to find the speed of National Hunt racing ever so easy, I can see him making all in his races and running the finish out of his rivals. In time, I think he could be a three miler, he’ll also have no problem jumping a fence.
Royal Reef is the highest rated horse we’ve ever purchased off the flat and looks a classy recruit to National Hunt racing. Dan Skelton will be training Royal Reef.
Royal Reef arrived at the yard on Thursday afternoon and has settled in nicely. Dan and his team will let the horse down over the next few weeks but we might do a little bit of loose schooling with the horse. We’ll then give Royal Reef his holiday. The plan is to be up and running in April 2017.
I’m hopeful Royal Reef might turn into a Saturday horse i.e win his novice races during the summer, take in some good handicaps then have a solid rating that will get him in some of the valuable Spring races at big meetings.
We purchased Royal Reef for £34,650. The horse is fully insured for his purchase price.
With 20 shares available this makes his purchase £1732.50.
£2100 will cover his purchase and all other costs until the horse comes into training next year. The bulk of the training fees won't be required until mid February. That figure will be around £1300 and cover all costs until October 2017 with nothing else to pay.
In summary if you budget for approx £3400 that will cover everything until the back end of 2017.
Five shares are left in Royal Reef, all others were reserved going into the sale. The remaining shares will be sold on a first come first served basis.
