Mountain Rescue did well to finish 4th yesterday considering he raced flat out for the best part of six furlongs in a one mile two race.
We settled in front nicely with George Baker setting the fractions he wanted. It all went wrong though when Star Of Spring ridden by Royston French for some reason decided to try and go past us at pace, a long way from home. This set alight Mountain Rescue who is a free going sort anyhow, our horse decided to race with him moving into top gear.
Long story short, we had run our race by the furlong pole. The two horses both fell into a hole including the one in behind that kept pushing us along. We just set it up for the other runners.
We could have done with a bit of cover but pinged the stalls and couldn’t’ slot in from a middle draw. These things happen in flat racing at times, it’s best to move on and draw a line through the race.
The Race Post review comments are a fair assessment, “Mountain Rescue did best of the three who had done too much in a share of the lead”
That’s racing as they say.
We have another runner today, Trafalgar Rock who makes his hurdles debut and debut for us in the 2:00 at Uttoxeter.
Trafalgar Rock’s build up to his new hurdles career has gone well since we purchased the horse at the Newmarket sales. Nelson as the girls call him has shown a good attitude and taken to jumping nicely. He’s is a big unit approx 16.3 hands and doesn’t look like a flat type.
This will be his first day at school, Nelson is the only un-raced horse in the line-up and meets experienced rivals.
If Trafalgar Rock can get into a good rhythm and jump nicely from the outset, hopefully he can run a nice race and show plenty of promise. He’ll improve for this outing, mentally and physically but it looks a fair starting point.
