The racing steps up a gear this afternoon with the start of the 3 day Newmarket Cambridgeshire meeting.

I’ve not placed any bets today as nothing really stands out, however one runner does line-up that’s in my notebook / tracker whilst I’m interested in couple of races over the weekend but more on those later.

The 3:10 is a 12 runner competitive handicap with little separating the top 5 horses in the market, the bookies don’t seem to have much of an idea and if honest I don’t either hence not having a bet.

Der Meister is a horse I’ve been waiting for though.

Trained by Andrew Balding, Der Meister won his first two races in game style without been spectacular. On each occasion the horse was just doing enough and there looked to be a bit more left in the locker, his wins can be upgraded.

Last time out Der Meister was stepped up in class and was going well as anything but ended up short of room and in a barging match, this resulted in Der Meister losing all chance and finishing 7th. With a clear run I’m fairly confident he could have been placed at worst.

Today’s race is another step up in class and that’s the problem as I just don’t know how good the horse is. Der Meister is certainly better than his latest effort but it would only be a guess if I said he could be competitive in a 0-90 handicap like this.

If I was having a bet today it would be a small EW bet on Der Meister priced at 8-1, however with my eyes on a couple of races over the weekend I’m keeping the powder dry.
