Highland Reel won the big race on Day 2 of Royal Ascot. I thought it was a bit early to write off Aidan O’Brien and so it proved. The result was a little frustrating as the two EW selections I put forward finished 2nd & 3rd at nice prices. It looked like we had the race nailed a furlong out but Highland Reel came home fast and spoiled the party.

The draw bias was awful yesterday. Low numbered runners had zero chance. A horse making all in the Hunt Cup was an amazing feat but crazy at the same time. The far side was like a golden highway and there’s no reason to think it won’t be the same this afternoon unless the thunder storms hit and even it out.

Day 3 of Royal Ascot is always the trickiest from a betting point of view I’ve found.

The big race is the Gold Cup at 4:20.

I’ve tried to get the jolly Order Of St George beat but can’t and think he’ll likely get the job done. Simple Verse at 8-1 could be the EW option in the race.

I’m not getting involved much today. I’ve backed Horroob EW at 20-1 in the Britannia Stakes at 5:00 and will likely leave it at that.

The Roger Varian trained horse looks progressive, his latest 4th place can be upgraded. Horroob had no chance from its draw but was seen running on strongly in the final furlong once in the clear. Any winning chance had gone by then but the way he stayed on was eye-catching. Today’s extra furlong looks ideal whilst stall 29 couldn’t be much better.

Horroob will have to find a lot more to go close in the Britannia but I’m hoping the extra furlong will bring out further improvement. We can also rule out the low numbered horses if yesterday was anything to go by. At odds of 20-1 and 6 places on offer, Horrob looks worth a few quid EW.

Who needs Royal Ascot when you have Ffos Las? That’s where we’re heading tonight with Sioux Chieftain in the 9:10.

Sioux Chieftain had a few niggles in the past but seems in good form now, we’ve had a clear run with him of late. This looks a competitive race for its grade with the top 3 in the betting hard to split and kick out of the places.

Our horse is still on the comeback trail and will improve again for tonight’s outing. Hopefully Sioux Chieftain can take another step forward and run a nice race with our sponsored jockey Charlie Hammond doing the steering.
