A hugely exciting today for us this this afternoon, I’ll come back to that in a moment. Day 1 of Royal Ascot made excellent viewing. Calyx was very impressive once again and looks a top-class prospect.
The winning distance was only 1 length but that doesn’t tell the full story. Nothing could go with Calyx on his side of the draw from an early stage. He had nothing give him a tow into the race and did all his own donkey work. Calyx was in front for the majority if the race, his effort can be markedly upgraded.
I think he’s the real deal and I hope you might have backed him for the 2000gns at 20-1 when highlighted last week.
Onto today. We are heading to Royal Ascot with a runner, Mountain Rescue lines up in the Royal Hunt Cup at 5:00. Mountain Rescue has been a star for us, trainer Chris Wall has done an outstanding job with the horse.
Mountain Rescue has earned his place in such a race and goes to Royal Ascot in very good form. It’s a big ask and a career best would be required to get competitive, our lad doesn’t know when he’s beat though. If we could finish halfway and beat more home than what’s behind us, that would be a great run. His owners will enjoy every moment of the day.
We also have another runner at Hamilton. Competition runs in the 5:40. Competition just got done in a tight photo finish last week and is due to go up in the weights. We have little choice but to try and run again quickly.
Not much stands out at Royal Ascot on day two and I’ve not had time to go through it in detail. Wesley Ward says Chelsea Cloisters is as good as any filly he’s ran in the Queen Mary at 2:30. If that’s the case she’ll likely win. I liked Shades Of Blue debut win for Clive Cox. She looked smart and has been saved for this race. They would be my two in the race.
Hydrangea will likely take some beating in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at 3:40. She’s short odds though. Urban Fox can perhaps go well at a decent price EW.
It’s impossible to oppose Cracksman, the big hitters will be steaming into him at 4-7 on. Poet’s Word I think is the only danger. The forecast could be the way to play things perhaps.
