On Friday of last week I went to the Newmarket sales and bid on just one horse that we identified a few weeks ago. I’m pleased to say the hammer fell our way and we secured our only target for 20,000gns. Two leading jump trainers were the underbidders.

The horse or should I say filly we purchased, is called NEWT. I’m really excited about her, I think Newt has a very good chance of developing into a well above average National Hunt mare.

Newt is a 3yo filly currently rated 67 and by St Leger winner Sixties Icon. Her dam Froglet, is a 3-time winner. Newt is also a half-sister to hurdle winner The Tiddly Tadpole, Australian 1m2 Group 1 winner Beaten Up, 1m4 Group 3 winner Harris Tweed plus 1m4 listed winner Vow.

Our new filly is bred in the purple, she would likely be the best-bred horse we’ve purchased.

Newt was trained by Sir Mark Prescott on the flat. Her last three runs show form figures of 1st 3rd 2nd.

Newt was beaten in a photo finish on her latest start but would have won in another stride. The horse that beat her “Our Kylie” had won 5 of its last 7 outings including a big race win at the Galway Festival. The form of Newt’s previous 3rd placed effort at Brighton has also worked out very well, the 2nd placed horse won next time out.

The above runs and her win came over trips of 1m5 and 1m6. Newt has a huge amount of stamina for a young filly. We spoke with the jockeys that have ridden Newt, they informed she requires two miles on the flat as did her previous connections.

Newt stands at 16.2 hands, she’s a lovely big chunky mare as you can see from the picture.

With her size, scope and breeding, Newt looks tailor made for National Hunt Racing, she will only get stronger and bigger. Newt is still a baby and green, flashes her tail, she’s far from the finished product and I would like to think Newt will give us many years of fun.

Newt will be campaigned as a juvenile hurdler this year. We know what’s required to win these races after doing so well in them in 2016. If you have a horse that stay two miles and jumps, you have every chance of doing well in juvenile races.

We aim to be up and running over hurdles in three weeks’ time. Newt will provide instant action.

Owning a filly / mare also brings other advantages, especially a well-bred previous winning one. Newt will always hold a broodmare value so your guaranteed a return on your investment. If we could get some black type into her, “first 3 in a Listed race” then you can name your price at the broodmare sales.

Newt will be trained by David Dennis in Worcestershire. David is doing a grand job with our other mare Included. The yard has some of the best facilities in the country, click on the below link to visit his website:

£21,000 divided by 20 “number of shares” is £1050. This is Newt’s purchase price.
