It was a pretty decent start to the Cheltenham Festival from a personal punting point of view, however the day ended in devastating fashion with the death of The Govaness. She was running the race of her life for our syndicate trainer Dr Newland, but unfortunately came down and the last hurdle and paid the ultimate price.

The Govaness was a gorgeous mare, her death is a huge loss and hit Richard and his team hard yesterday. Racing can be so cruel at times.

There’s no point messing around on Day 2 looking for big priced winners, today is about getting stuck in to some of the good things, touch wood.

I’m all over Yanworth in the Neptune Investment Hurdle, the horse oozed class in his races this season and looks a top prospect. His task has been made harder with Yorkhill now lining up but the Mullins horse has never run on decent ground in his entire career. My only worry is trainer Alan King has been a bit quite over the past few weeks and clearly Mr Mullins remains in very good form.

However I’ve had a good bet on Yanworth at 6-4 and think he could be a star in the making.

My second good bet of the day is More Of That in the RSA Chase at 2:10. The 2014 World Hurdle winner came close to running in the Gold Cup, he’s held in very high regard and looked like an outstanding prospect in his two starts over a fence. The horse is 4 from 4 at Cheltenham and I take him to beat No More Heroes in what looks a matchup.

If Yanworth & More Of That get the job done I might play up some of the winnings on Un De Sceaux in the Queen Mother. So far in the race I’ve placed a small bet on Felix Yonger, 16-1 EW for a bit of interest. He looks a bit of value for a place.

I enjoy watching the Cross Country races and have actually been looking for a horse to run in the race. As normal I’ve backed Any Currency EW, he’s a grand type and won me some good money in the past around here. Ignore his last effort Any Currency wasn’t right.

It’s possible something with younger legs will get the better of Any Currency but he’ll give you a good run for your money. A good trade option is Valadom, his odds could trade 65% shorter in running and allow you to lock in a few quid.

The Fred Winter at 4:50, I backed Diego Du Charmil last week "see previous posts", also added Duke Street EW at 25-1.
