I’ve been on the lookout for spring / summer hurdler for some time and had my eye on one particular horse called Gran Maestro who’s trained by Ruth Carr in Yorkshire. The horse was bred to be special, half brother to the French Oaks winner West Wind, out of the high class Medicean.

Although Gran Maestro hasn’t quite hit Group 1 heights on the flat he must be one of the most consistent flat horses this season, last six runs read 4,1,3,3,2,6. In all of those 6 runs the furthest GM was beat is just 4 lengths whilst majority were under two lengths.

I rang Ruth Carr on the off chance we might be able to get first refusal at some point for the future, Ruth was very helpful and actually said they would be open to offers as the horse is coming towards the end of his flat career, aged 5 and Ruth also thought GM would make a lovely hurdler.

Long story short I’m was absolutely delighted to agree a fee within 10 minutes for Gran Maestro, It’s probably one of the best phone calls I’ve ever made.

The horse reminds me a lot of Changing The Guard who I had tremendous success with, Gran Maestro is a nice compact type who travels through his races handy doing everything on the bridle. GM shows a great attitude, really sticks his neck out whilst battles to the line plus has won on heavy ground and good to firm, I think the horse prefers a decent surface such is his high cruising speed but if the going did turn soft we wouldn’t be pulling him out.

Gran Maestro is currently rated 73 on the flat but has achieved an RPR of 80 recently, he looks a very sound type ran 7 times so far this season so is clearly battle hardened. I can’t find a negative with the horse.

I’m confident Gran Maestro will take to hurdles and find running at two miles ever so easy, with his fighting attitude and kick at the finish GM has a lovely profile for national hunt racing whilst could easily improve for the switch of codes.

It’s fair to say I’m quite excited about his chances.

Gran Maestro will go into training with 2014 Grand National winning trainer Dr Richard Newland who needs zero introduction, GM should be ready to run over hurdles towards end of July and continue until late October.

If you would like any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch, our syndicates fill up quickly, I except all of the shares to be taken by the weekend.
