It’s Doncaster St Leger day, the final classic of the flat season. I don’t have any real thoughts on the race, it’s not a bad renewal but it lacks that stand out class horse. We don’t have any EW terms with just the 7 runners whilst the top three in the betting are hard to split, the race will be a watching brief for me.
Secret Number “2:50 Chester” returns from a year off the track but runs well fresh, the horse clearly has a few problems but holds the stand out form in this race. Trainer Saeed bin Suroor will have done plenty of work with his runner so I’m not too worried about his absence although it’s likely he will tighten up a little for the outing.
Secret Number looks the main reason why James Doyle is riding at the meeting I’ve also heard he's been going nicely on the Newmarket gallops. The price of 5-2 looks good, hopefully the selection can outclass his rivals providing everything holds up.
The 2:35 at Doncaster is a real pin stick job but I like following sprinters when they hit a bit of form. The Charles Hills trained B Fifty Two hadn’t shown much for a while but bounced back last weekend with a fast finishing 2nd place, the horse also messed up the start.
B Fifty Two looks nicely handicapped at the moment as he’s won off higher marks in the past, we’ll need luck in running with likely hold up tactics but a repeat of last Saturdays's effort should give him every chance, 9-1 EW.
A horse I’ve mentioned on here quite a few times returns to the track today, Lightning Moon “3:10 Doncaster” trained by the excellent Ed Walker. I know Ed thinks Lightning Moon can be a real star but he’s had a run of niggles and little setbacks. According to the trainers website the Prix de la Foret is the big aim at Longchamp in a few weeks but I’m sure connections will be hoping for a decent effort today.
More rain the better for this fellow whilst the step up to 7 furlongs looks ideal. I hope he runs a big race for Ed and his team, they deserve another big race winner, their a yard going places.
Azrur 7:25 Musselburgh has possibly been setup for a gamble.
