Heavy rain spoilt the first day of the Newmarket July meeting, the going changed from a perfect racing surface to soft come the second race.

It was virtually impossible to make up ground from off the pace, horses that made all proved difficult to peg back whilst the best stayer in the Princess of Wales’s stakes Cavalryman was not for catching under a front running ride.

The weather is more of the same this afternoon at Newmarket, from a betting point of view the meeting is now going to be very hard work.

My EW pick for yesterday Belardo finished 4th like all good ew bets do. The horse travelled beautifully during the race, last one off the bridle apart from the winner. Belardo was positioned just behind the pace and couldn’t quicken when asked on the soft surface but stayed on well towards the finish.

Keep with Belardo, the horse is held in the highest regard but needs quick ground and will likely get further in time, wherever he lines up next I would be surprised if beaten.
